Shell drill rig Kulluk adrift, NW Gulf of Alaska

On Friday, Dec. 28, the Aiviq tow vessel lost its engine power while towing Shell's Arctic drill rig Kulluk from Dutch Harbor to Seattle for winter maintenance, allowing the drill rig to drift freely towards south end of Kodiak Island. A considerable amount of diesel was on board both the Aiviq and the Kulluk.
